Today is my first official day back from vacation, but my tip for you today is about the unofficial day that I had back yesterday and the other unofficial day I leveraged the Friday before I left. I call these my vacation cheat days.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever heard somebody say: \u201cI need a vacation from my vacation,\u201d maybe you\u2019ve even said that yourself. I think the primary cause of this is the lack of any meaningful transition. You work your brains out trying to get ready to take some time off, and then as soon as you get back you\u2019ve got a heaping pile of emails and other immediate demands. I\u2019m not sure when I started doing this, but I\u2019ve found a pretty elegant solution that has served me really well. I block the day before my vacation and the day after my vacation on my calendar and I also set my Out of Office message starting that day before and let people know that I\u2019ll be back the day after I\u2019m actually back. This gives me an extra little bit of time to wrap up loose ends before I leave without all of the regular meetings and everything else weighing down on me, same thing when I get back, and it\u2019s the getting back cheat day that I think is the most powerful.<\/p>\n<p>If you only do one of these, take that extra day on your return. This way I can take a full day without anything else on my calendar to get back to inbox zero. That allows me to be completely in control of everything when I return \u201cofficially\u201d the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Doing this has really helped me benefit that much more from the time off and the rest and recovery from vacation, because what good is vacation if you immediately come back to double the stress?
