Scott Ingram: You\u2019re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I\u2019m your host, Scott Ingram. Today\u2019s tip comes from JoBeth Hanak. JoBeth has been in sales for almost 6 years, successfully moving from being a #1 personal trainer to a top rep in SaaS sales. She\u2019s been successful in full-cycle closing roles and, recently, started an enterprise BDR role selling dispute management software. Here she is:<\/p>\n

JoBeth Hanak: Hey it’s JoBeth, and I’m going to talk about the importance of just getting started. So I’m an artist and I mostly paint these days. And one of the most important things that I’ve learned in order to create art is to just get started. Basically, a white blank canvas can be super intimidating. So what a lot of artists do is to start with just not making the canvas white. So maybe that’s through throwing random colors on there to mess it up a little bit or just painting it a solid color. Some people will get a little fancy with it, but somehow what this does is it just tricks your brain into being able to get going into a flow. If I can tell myself to just paint for five minutes, sometimes this is enough to light a spark and I will paint 4 hours.<\/p>\n

So I’ve used the same sort of tactic with cold calling with sales. I’ve cold call for years, but sometimes I still get a little bit antsy if I haven’t done it in a couple of days or something. So I choose a lower level contact, take the pressure off of booking a meeting, and just hit dial. It can be intimidating to be like, Okay, I need to make 50 calls today, but if I just tell myself like, hey, let’s just get started. Let’s do this for five minutes. Just makes it a lot easier to get into the groove, which I feel like is important.<\/p>\n

So sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. And if you can knock that out, then you can have a really productive day ahead of you. Even if you started off in a weird headspace. So hope this helps and feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n
