Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram.\u00a0Yesterday Jack Wilson mentioned Jeff Bajorek and like Beatlejuice, if you mention his name he just might show up with his own tip the next day. Here he is:<\/p>\n

Jeff Bajorek: There aren’t any golfers listening to this podcast, are there? Are you so cliche as to be in sales and also be fond of that sport? Well, certainly am. And today I want to share with you one of my secret weapons when it comes to doing background research on my prospects and customers. It’s called the Golf Handicap Index Network, or GHIN. And you can learn more at GHIN.com. Not a sponsor of this program yet, but maybe Scott can have a conversation.<\/p>\n

I use this because it’s important to me to understand how I get better as a golfer and I can track my handicap over time. I can see where I need to improve, I can see where I’ve played in the past, I can see how I scored, I can even remember those dates sometimes in the weather conditions that were there. All of that factors in to this formula. But most importantly, and perhaps most valuably to you, you can look everybody up in this network. It’s searchable.<\/p>\n

So if you have a prospect that you have a meeting coming up with and you get the hint of the impression by their LinkedIn profile or somewhere else on the web that they might be into golf, you may want to search that database. You may want to see that they played a memorable postcard-worthy golf course just a couple of months ago. You may want to ask them about that experience. Might put them in a good mood, might put them in a bad mood, depending on how they played, but you get the data to see how you want to broach that conversation.<\/p>\n

If you are a golfer as well, you probably have some of your own favorite moments that you can share with them. You may have your own trials and tribulations about the game that’s so frustrating and so rewarding at the same time. It’s easily something that you can bond over and I think that’s pretty apparent to see.<\/p>\n

So my recommendation to you, if you’re into golf at all, is to sign up with a GHIN index so that you can track your own progress. It’s very rewarding and fulfilling to see yourself getting better, much like you do as a salesperson. But I also want you to consider the searchable index, the database of other golfers out there that you may be trying to connect with on a different level, and how valuable that might be for you.
