Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. One of the things that I know is a hot topic right now and that I’m working to incorporate more tips about from people who are great at it is LinkedIn. One of the greatest is Amy Volas. Amy’s first business love was Enterprise Sales her second is startups and she took 20 years of experience to start Avenue Talent Partners where she works with startups to help them build and scale their enterprise sales tips. Here she is answering my question about playing the long game on LinkedIn:
Amy Volas: So the question is, if I’m playing the long game on LinkedIn, what do I do to make the most out of that? So I started my business, it’ll be four years in October of 2019 and one of the very best pieces of advice that I received when I started my company was, and I was already involved on the platform, but from a very different perspective. And I knew that LinkedIn was powerful I just didn’t realize how powerful it was. And one of the best pieces of advice that I received was if you can start producing content that illustrates all of your experience and that you have something important to say and that that can help other people, you’re not going to see the results of that for a really long time, but it will come back to you and it will pay dividends. You just have to be patient.
And so I ran with that. I didn’t have any expectations. I still have no expectations when I put something on LinkedIn or when I publish a piece of content on my blog or I get guests published through somewhere else. I never do it to figure I want to break the internet. I want to go viral. Because if I’m going viral with a bunch of people that have nothing to do with what I’m doing, does that really help me at the end of the day. And so for me, it’s really about am I doing the right work with the right people consistently and this also served me really, really well in my sales career. It served me really, really well in my business. If I’m doing that and I’m talking about things that mean something to me that had deeply affected me, that have changed my life or I see my clients going through or I see candidates going through or I see colleagues going through or I see startups going through or somebody else’s talking about it and it stops me dead in my tracks and gives me some sort of emotion. That’s my measuring stick. That’s the same thing that I want to do. That’s why I write what I write.
I have over 20 years of experience in sales and startups and enterprise sales with big companies and small companies, and the thing is I’m not perfect. I’ve made mistakes. People around me have made mistakes. I’ve got it really right. I’ve been part of things that have gotten it really right. There is so much to that that I have learned that has made me better. Things that have held me back. I want to be able to share that so that people can get better around us. Because sadly, sales still have a negative stigma around it. And I am proud of the fact that sales is my first business club. I’m invested in committed to this community. And part of that is because of that true feeling from my soul as it were. Sharing is very rewarding and it’s not just, did I get a business lead. I get a lot of feedback behind the scenes. That was like, I tried what you said and it’s made a huge difference. Thank you so much. Like that stuff brings tears to my eyes.
And so for me, it is the long game because I did my business to really do something, to make a change, to make something better, to help people and companies get better together. And I know that sounds really fluffy, but that’s what wakes me up in the morning and being able to share content to do just that. I didn’t want my business to just be transactional or a flash in the pan. I want to be here for the long haul. Good economy, bad economy, I don’t care. I just want to be here doing good business with good people, making a difference and part of how I do that is not expecting anything in return. And writing from my soul of what I know in my mind to have worked, to be true, to challenge something that I think might be broken or needs to be talked about. And I think a lot of people want to play it safe. I call it living out loud. I am living out loud and yes I have trolls and yes I have people that disagree with me and I think you have to be okay with that if you’re going to do that. And it has to be consistent and it has to be over the course of time. And I will say “Seeds that I sowed three-plus years ago are just starting to come to fruition now.” And I’m cool with that.
