Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today Meshell Baker is back to help us celebrate Valentine’s Day. Here she is:
Meshell Baker: Hello and Happy Valentine’s Day. So what’s love got to do with sales? Well, a whole lot since you asked. When you want more clients, you want more sales, you want more success. Well, it’s interesting. Pretty much all sellers are looking for that. They’re looking for the more. And interestingly enough, the way more works is called the universal law of compensation. And the way the law is broken down is it says what you resist persists, your negative patterns repeat themselves, and the seeds of gratitude, kindness, joy will bring more positive things to you.
Now, having said that, what does that mean in Layman’s terms? Well, basically, when you are complaining about your pipeline, you’re complaining about your clients, you’re complaining about your leads, you’re complaining about your supervisor, you’re complaining about your colleagues. You think it’s unfair. Things didn’t go your way. All of that is complaining. You will remain in that place where you keep experiencing more things that don’t go your way. The only way to elevate yourself out of your circumstances is to start to see it as being favorable, which is positive, which means that you’re accepting situations regardless of what you see, feel and hear as something that’s working in your favor. And one of the most powerful emotions that you can emit to move you towards those positive and favorable outcomes is love.
Now, having said that, another little thing is that ideal client, that client avatar that you worked out, the ones that pay and buy, the most expensive thing that you have to offer without even guessing, because they just want the outcomes of working with you, the ones that refer you other clients, the ones that you love to work with, and they enjoy being around you. Well, that’s love. You would love to have a roster full of those clients.
So L-O-V-E, love matters a lot in sales because you will not get something, you do not get an apple tree from an orange tree. So you cannot multiply love by going out and doing things you hate, griping and complaining about what you do not have. It requires that you begin to show up in a state that no matter what you see, feel and hear, you love it so that you can attract what you are seeking, which is more clients you love to work with.
So I’ll break it down for you like this.
L – Listen. Learning to listen so that you can queue in on what it sounds like when you’re preparing yourself for that ideal client, what are the things they need? Because you have decided to become a solution to their problem. So learning to queue in and listen to problems and accept problem is just part of who you are. I am a seller, so I am a solver and there’s nothing to solve. If I don’t have a problem. So get over it. Start solving problems.
Observation. So begin observing with curiosity instead of criticism. Remember, start thinking about like how is this going to help me to be a better seller? What can I learn from this? Who can I contact to talk about this and expand on this idea, this opportunity? It’s not happening to you. It is happening for you.
Versatility. The flexibility that when things are inconvenient, uncomfortable, creating uncertainty and the unplanned happened does not matter. I am still awesome. You must begin to get in that state because things rarely have ever go the way you plan and your ability to be adept in your versatility and flexibility is how you still shine. People don’t need people who fall apart when things don’t go their way. They’re looking for people who stand up and in the midst of challenges and difficulties, they still deliver solutions. They don’t make excuses.
The last one is enjoyment. Are you enjoying yourself? Let’s get back to that. When you are thinking that you’ll get somewhere. When I become a top performer I’ll be happy. When I make this much money, I’ll be happy. When I close this deal, I’ll be happy. If you’re not happy on the journey you won’t find joy when you get there. You are creating a habit and standard of who you are every day by how you react and act in the face of circumstances, difficulties, and challenges.
So L-O-V-E, learns to love every day and all the things that are happening along the way and you’ll be amazed at how many more sales and opportunities show up. Have a wonderful Valentine’s day and a great day selling!
