Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. It’s Meshell Baker Monday, and here she is:
Meshell Baker: Hello and welcome to today and I hope this message finds you the Master of your Soul. Yes, I said the Master of your Soul. So what do I mean by that? Well, what I mean is that circumstances are there to refine you, not define you. And I’ll say it again, circumstances are meant to refine you, not define you. It’s easy to get caught up on what is not happening, or what someone did not do, or what someone did do, or what someone did say how life is treating you, how unfair it is, how things are not going your way, how someone didn’t show up and do what they said they would do. So much of life is about how you as an individual human on this planet decide what you’re going to allow to dictate who you are.
Circumstances do not define you. They are simply coming into your life to refine you. The people who have the best lives, the people who have the most amazing lives, the people who are the most successful in sales, yes, I said most successful in sales have found a way that they best handle the external events of life. Other words, their circumstances, and they use them in their favor. This is not an easy thing by far to do. It does require fortitude, it requires faith, it requires practice, it requires persistence, resilience, patience, all the characters, and qualities of a top performer. It requires curiosity. Become curious about why a situation or circumstance or person continues to irritate you, continues to bother you, continues to trip you up. It is never about them and what they did or did not do, did, or did not say. It is about you stopping and pausing and assessing to see why is this bothering you and what is it about you that you can refine, make better, learn more, do differently, so that you can sidestep, move through, away from anything that deters you, distracts you, denies you and dissuade you from the excellence that you are for your sales career, your sales leadership, wherever you are in sales, as a business owner, if you are, wherever you are. Whatever is stopping you is meant to refine you not define by defining. Be a definition of what you can’t have or what you didn’t get. Is meant to create a sense of resilience and resourcefulness and relentless driving you so that you can face it and continue to move forward and have the success that is yours.
So again, circumstances are not meant to define you. They are simply there to refine you, to help you, to pause, to take a deep breath, and to get the assistance. There are so many people who have gone through whatever is challenging you, whatever is tripping you up, whatever is again denying you from that top-level sales success that you know you’re completely capable of delivering, ask for the help and become relentless in asking for the help. If someone doesn’t know the answer put on you, if you sit there and think something’s wrong with you because someone didn’t know your answer, it is about you asking until you get your answer, seeking until you solve. That is what a top performer does. Their goal, the target is what creates the success. It’s never the landmines of life that deter, deny, distract them from what they want.
So I’m going to finish today with a quote. It’s called Invictus. It’s by William Ernest Henley. It’s a powerful quote. So I’m going to wrap this up with this and you can listen to it. “Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be, for my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears. Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
May this day find you incredibly successful as you face whatever comes your way. And remember, you decide how you will dictate whatever is happening externally, decide that you are successful and this is just refining that greatness that lies within. Have a wonderful day selling.
