Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Amber Deibert. Amber is a Performance Coach for Enterprise sellers. She helps them create the mindset and behaviors needed for success. Here she is:
Amber Deibert: What’s up, everybody? Your friendly neighborhood performance coach, Amber Deibert here. Today I want to talk with you about how to feel confident. Now, the misconception about confidence is that confidence is something that people are born with. You either have it or you don’t. I’m telling you right now that is completely false. Even the people who you see who you would think are very confident have areas of their life that they’re not confident in.
So let me tell you what creates confidence. Confidence is earned through action. Now, let me give an example of this. I want you to think to the past when maybe you were doing your first outbound prospecting, or your first demos, or your first calls. You were probably terrified of doing that because you’d never done it before. If somebody said, Do you have confidence you can do this? You might be like, Maybe. I don’t know. I’ve done other things, so maybe I could do it. But you didn’t have confidence in that exact skill because you had not done it. But now I want you to look at if you’ve done that skill over and over and over again, you probably do feel very confident in it.
The only difference between somebody who’s confident in a skill and somebody who’s not is repetition, period. Confidence is earned through action. So it’s really fun for me to look back at things that used to be terrifying for me and now are no longer terrifying. And the reason that they’re not terrifying is because I just kept doing it, period. The same will happen for you for the next things that you’re trying to build your confidence in. Literally, the only thing you need to do to build your confidence is keep putting in the reps. Do that thing over and over and over again, and pretty soon you’ll have a track record of being able to point to a bunch of different times when you did that thing successfully and did not die. That’s the key. Your brain is trying to keep you from dying. You’ll be able to see that track record and you’ll be able to say, I’m confident I can do this again.
Confidence is not something you’re born with. Confidence is something that you can earn and that you can create through repetition. Come connect with me on LinkedIn. I’d love to see you over there. Search for me at Amber Deibert.
