Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes in the form of a clip from the newest episode on the Sales Success Stories podcast that we just released earlier this week. Here’s a quick sample from Brian Hicks, the top sales performer at Belkins:
Brian Hicks: I’m not ignorant to think that everybody will be in the perfect position for themselves and that everybody is going to be in the happiest role and that they’re going to always love their job. If you love their job, love it too much, they wouldn’t call it work. I’m not ignorant to that.
I recognize that there’s certain necessities that we have to be able to provide for, but there’s a lot that comes along with knowing your worth and understanding that the dichotomy between companies and employees, the paradigm is shifting. People are recognizing their worth more and more every day. We no longer will settle for a company that treats us like a number. And the more people that won’t do that will continue to change the environment, the atmosphere.
I’m not talking from like, “We need a revolution mindset.” I’m not saying that. I’m saying that you know what you bring. Don’t overestimate what you can deliver. Don’t underestimate what you can deliver. Look at the numbers and look at the facts and look at what you’re going to drive to an organization and demand certain standards. It’s just like with anything else with a relationship, you set boundaries. You have to do the same thing with employers.
And listen, I get it. If you have to settle on something that’s not quite your fit, the one thing I would tell you is do not get complacent because you found something that’s 5 out of 10, but it’s paying the bills and find yourself there two years down the road.
Take it if you have to take it, but get to work finding that perfect fit because, yeah, things have to get done and there’s a cost to not having a job, but there’s also a cost of being in something that’s meant really and physically draining to you because you’re not happy and you’re going to be a much better mom, a much better dad, a much better sister, a much better brother if you’re happy when you wake up and you have to work. And you’re not just waiting for Friday to come so you can tie one-off with the friends or the boys or the girls.
When you wake up and realize that your life is mostly spent working, then you’ll take more care on who you’re working for and who you’re working with and you’ll be grateful that you did.
