Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Jacquelyn Nicholson. Jacquelyn has 3 decades building/supporting the best brands in the world and growing businesses in new markets from scratch, she is passionate about being the woman her husband would marry again, the mom her kids are proud of, and the person her boss or customer would work with again. Here she is:
Jacquelyn Nicholson: I saw someone shared this the other day, that comparison is the thief of joy, and it really resonated with me. When we start to compare ourselves to others, for example, the sales rep that crushed their quota when you didn’t, or somebody that won a big deal when you didn’t, maybe somebody had a nicer vacation or a nicer car, that comparison robs you of the joy that you could have.
Instead of focusing on what someone else has, focus on what you have. I think the antidote for the comparison game is the gratitude mindset. Thinking about all the things that we have to be thankful for, a roof over your heads, a job, your health, whatever that might be. When we compare ourselves to someone else, we’re missing a key component. We don’t really know what they have going on that’s negative. We’re only seeing the positive.
So instead of focusing on the glitz and glamor and the perfect life that someone else’s LinkedIn profile or Instagram feed or whatever it is, seems to present, you never really know what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes. All that you’ve really been given is your own life, your own set of circumstances, your own territory, your own quotas. And it’s not really fair to you to compare yourself with someone else. It truly is the thief of joy. Focus on being the best person that you can be in the circumstances that you’re in. Bloom where you are planted and go get it done.
