Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip features both Jacquelyn Nicholson and Mike Simmons in another of their joint tips. Here they are:
Jacquelyn Nicholson: Do you have a word for the year, and what is it?
Mike Simmons: My word for the year is rise.
Jacquelyn Nicholson: I like it.
Mike Simmons: What do you like about it?
Jacquelyn Nicholson: Well, what I like about that concept is to me, I love the sunrise. I love it when people rise up and work together. It’s a beautiful feeling when you rise in the morning. It’s another day above ground, which is always a good day in my view. But tell me why you ended up with that word and what it means to you.
Mike Simmons: So part of it was the launch of this thing that Jen and I are doing with that Phoenix Club, and it’s the Rise of the Phoenix. So there’s this rise of this bird from the ashes. We rise together. If everything that I do is put through the lens of, am I either rising for self, rising for others, helping others rise, then each of those things are good. I can quickly say, yes, this is the right work for me to be doing. Now, then I have to align it with general goals and objectives. But from a base level perspective, am I rising or am I allowing myself to be put down? Am I putting down others? Am I helping people rise? So that’s the background behind it. It’s all connected to the Phoenix and rising together. And a quick test to say, am I either rising for self or am I helping others rise on their own?
Jacquelyn Nicholson: I love that. Well, another reason I love the concept is as a person who grew up in the Midwest, completely landlocked, the concept of tides in the ocean were very foreign to me, and I didn’t see the ocean until I was a freshman in college. I saw the Pacific Ocean with my brother, who has passed away. And I have just a fond memory of being at Laguna Beach and Newport Beach with him and seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time. I just remember staring at it with my mouth open wide and thinking, It’s so big. That was all I could say. I’d seen Lake Michigan, but this was nothing like Lake Michigan. I just remember being completely overwhelmed. I fell in love with the ocean and boats and sailing. I love the saying that a rising tide lifts all of the boats. So that’s one of the things I think you and I both love about the communities that we’re involved in, with you and Jen are building with Phoenix Club, what Sales Success Summit and the Sales Success Society has meant to both of us is we make each other better, all of us together. And in the profession that we choose to be in, whether it’s an entrepreneur like you, a salesperson like me, we need great people around us. And that rise concept is a beautiful one.
And also my daughter, who I taught to cook, is now teaching me about all the cool things, the complexity as of sourdough bread. And yesterday, I spent watching my dough rise. It was a very fascinating thing. And I learned something new. I learned all about all of this yesterday. I, sadly, do not have a word for the year. I do have a phrase, which is, “Don’t let the enemy have a seat at your table.” So I have to figure out how to make that a… I have to make that into a one-word concept because I do appreciate the brevity of it. I haven’t quite gotten there yet, but I like it. I approve of your word of the year. Your year of the word.
Mike Simmons: I’ll give you two potential words, attract and magnet. And the reason why I would do either one of those, why I would suggest either one of those is, what do you want to attract? Because if you attract the right things, you’re not going to allow someone to have that seat at the table with you. And then the thing I like about magnet is, magnets both attract and repel.
Jacquelyn Nicholson: Yeah, they do.
Mike Simmons: Those are two words for consideration. Hope that helps.
Jacquelyn Nicholson: It’s very helpful. And if you don’t have a word and you don’t have a tribe, take a look at the Phoenix Club, take a look at the Sales Success Society.
Mike Simmons: The Sales Success Society is amazing. We’ve met some amazing people who are doing amazing things and are absolutely committed to helping everybody get better. And the cool thing about Sales Success Society is there’s this Slack channel where there’s a lot of interaction. There’s a lot of interaction, a lot of engagement, and some tacos. And there’s the annual event. I think the annual event is in October this year.
Jacquelyn Nicholson: Yes, it is.
Mike Simmons: I know it’s typically in October, October, November time period.
Jacquelyn Nicholson: Yeah, right after the last weekend of Austin City Limits and not on Canadian Thanksgiving, which for years we had the mistake of making it on Canadian Thanksgiving, I think.
