Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Davidson Hang. As the Managing Partner at Valent, Davidson helps humble high achievers conquer self-criticism to create their dream lives intentionally. Here he is:
Davidson Hang: I’m really excited to do this episode as I’ve been listening to Scott Ingram’s podcast way back in the day in 2018 when he stumbled upon my news feed. So today, I will be letting you know about how to stop comparing yourself to others and how to perform better as a salesperson. I struggled with self-confidence my whole life being an Asian-American in sales. There weren’t a lot of leaders, CROs, and VP of Sales that looked like me. What I did was I reached out to other Asian Executives at other companies using LinkedIn to find mentorship. That helped me be able to have more confidence in myself because I was able to build a strong intentional network, and we’re always helping each other out. They’re able to make introductions for me.
What I realized from this whole journey is to stop comparing myself to others. This is easier said than done because salespeople were very competitive, and we’re always trying to one up and trying to get to the next tier instead of just appreciating what we have in front of us. For instance, when I was in SDR, I wanted to become an AE so badly. When I was in an SMB, AE, get promoted to mid-market, from mid-market, then to enterprise from enterprises strategic accounts.
What I failed to realize is I was always comparing myself to the best of the best. Even though I would be pretty top 10 of the leader board, maybe the second or third or fourth or fifth rep at the company. But I would still beat myself up because I was always comparing myself to the number one rep. Sometimes what I realized is the more money I made, I thought it would make me happier. But actually, I had the same level of happiness. Every time I got promoted, I thought I would be happier because I’m making more, I’m going to nicer vacations, I have a nicer house, nicer car. But what I failed to realize is that happiness comes from within.
Instead of me compare myself to the people’s highlight reels on social media, on LinkedIn, you’re always getting notifications, people are getting promoted all the time or talking about how they’ve won all these multimillion dollar deals. But once I started to focus on loving myself and gave myself the space to just be, and it’s okay that I don’t have a million subscribers. Right. And once I started to love myself more through giving myself space and taking care of myself, being able to say no, set boundaries, my life started being so much better. And that started from taking that look within instead of all the external validations, the President’s Clubs, all the awards, winning all the spiffs, and networking just to get promoted all the time.
Working at LinkedIn, it taught me the value of having strong mentors, having a lot of people who you could look up to, but also being okay with where you’re at in the moment. Once you start to accept yourself, once you start to love yourself, once you start to give yourself space, you’ll grow. Once you’re in a good headset, once you take care of your health, your nutrition, all of those things, you’ll actually start to perform better as well. Because I know for me, the times where I was in survival, I was just thinking so much about the next, the next, the next. I wasn’t able to slow down and just smell the roses, be able to be with my beautiful wife, be able to pursue passion projects, publishing my five books, and I have a book coming out.
So once you start to give yourself space, people will naturally reach out to you for advice. And once you put yourself out there and you have that delicate balance of treating yourself, being okay with where you’re at, you’ll start to perform better. That’s what I did on my journey.
