Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Meshell Baker, our favorite sales confidence igniter and authentic selling crusader. Here she is:
Meshell Baker: Hello, and welcome to today’s sales empowerment session. We’re going to dive into a common challenge that you likely face managing your inner critic, especially in sales where confidence and positivity are key. And I want you to know even the most seasoned sales professionals face this challenge daily, so you’re not alone. You have an inner critic. That’s the voice that cast doubt, generates negative thoughts, and sometimes stops you right in your tracks. It can be tough, especially in sales, when your mood and confidence directly influence your performance. Whether it’s a bad sales call or a lost deal, these experiences can feed your inner critic and amplify the voice of self-doubt in your head.
So first, it’s crucial to recognize and label these thoughts that the voice is saying, Awareness is the first step towards change. When you start hearing these doubts, pause, take a breath, and acknowledge these thoughts are thoughts. They’re not fact. Your thoughts are not real. This can help you distance yourself from the negativity and the emotions that have flooded you about the thoughts and remind that these are common feelings that everyone experiences, not true reflections of your ability and your worth.
Two, you want to challenge the critic, the voice in your head. It’s not enough just to recognize it. You must actively dispute these thoughts. So challenge and replace. When these negative thoughts into your mind, challenge the validity. Ask yourself, Is this real? And you will find quickly that they’re not. You will find that they’re exaggerated based on fear rather than reality. And you know fear is not real. Replace these with positive affirmations that are rooted in the truth of your past successes and your future goals. For example, if you think, I can’t close this deal, remind yourself of the times when you’ve successfully closed deals. Let those feelings flood you and overtake the exaggerated negative thought. The act of challenging and replacing will gradually reprogram your thought patterns towards positive and resilience.
And the next step, building resilience. This is developing your growth mindset. Success is rented and the rent is due daily. So it’s about building resilience day by day by day. Embracing a growth mindset means that you view each and every sales interaction as an opportunity to learn regardless of the outcome. You don’t ever lose when you learn. This mindset shifts your focus from proving to improving, which reduces the power of your inner critic.
Remember, each setback is a setup for a comeback. Keep pushing forward, learn from every experience, and use constructive criticism to grow rather than to discourage yourself. You are successful regardless of what has transpired is how you will continue to be successful. To think about this, you must manage the inner critic. This is the trigger of feelings that will flood you to have you feel like a failure instead of moving forward. Your sales performance and your overall well-being require that you remember. Feelings are temporary. Your focus on your future is what will create the favorable outcomes and the fortuitous sales career. Start by recognizing and labeling these thoughts, replace them with positive affirmation, and develop your growth mindset to focus on continuous learning and improvement.
Remember, you’re not alone. You’re not the only seller that has experienced this. Every one of us experience it, and the successful ones learn how to move forward despite them. Embrace these tips and watch your sales and your confidence soar.
