Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Meshell Baker, our favorite sales confidence igniter and authentic selling crusader. Here she is:
Meshell Baker: Hello, and welcome to the uncomfortable truth about sales success. Today, I’m thrilled to share with you some invaluable insights that will transform your approach to achieving sales success. Now, I want to begin with letting you know that those who struggle early in their sales career leaders learn the valuable lessons of resourcefulness, perseverance, and the power of a relentless work ethic. They also learn to hustle and find opportunities where others see obstacles, and they never give up on their dreams, no matter how daunting the odds.
However, those who are mediocre sellers, they chase success, comfort, and ease. Yet research and real-world experience have revealed a paradox. Sellers who have endured hardship often outperform those who haven’t. We live in this world obsessed with overnight success and instant gratification, but the reality is far more nuanced. True lasting sales success is almost always born from struggle, from the relentless pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity.
I’m going to give you three tips about struggle to help you stay strong.
Tip number one. Struggle builds resilience. Just as muscles grow stronger through resistance training, your character, the quality of who you are, and your sales acumen become more resilient through facing and overcoming challenges. Every rejection, every tough negotiation, every no, is an opportunity to build your resilience, making you tougher and more prepared for future sales challenges.
Tip number two. Struggle fuels innovation. Necessity is born often from struggle. Remember, the mother of invention is necessity. When your sales numbers are down, you will be forced to think creatively, to innovatively, to find new solutions. Remember, some of the greatest sales strategies are born from moments of intense pressure and need.
Tip number three. Struggle sharpens focus. In times of ease, it’s easy lose sight of your sales goals. However, when you are in the thick of it, focus becomes razor sharp. You become laser focus on what truly matters, cutting through distractions and honing in on the actions that will lead to closing deals and achieving your sales target. Keep that target in the forefront of your mind every single day, and you will find a way. Research supports the power of embracing struggle.
Angela Duckworth, a noted academic, psychologist, and the author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, her research reveals that passion and perseverance in the face of adversity are key predictors of success. Her studies show that those who exhibit grit are more likely to achieve their long-term goals, regardless of the obstacles in their past.
So I want to share with you a technique. You can immediately implement this step. Starting today, embrace your sales struggles. You see, the next time you face a challenge in a sales call or a meeting, take a moment to reframe and re-imagine it. Instead of seeing it as a roadblock, see it as a stepping stone. Write down three potential solutions, no matter how unconventional, weird, or carny they may seem. You want to look at how the next time you experience this, you will have a solution. This simple exercise exercise will shift your mindset from one of frustration to one of imagination and opportunity. This practice will empower you to begin seeing the possibilities hidden within every obstacle.
Remember, sales success is not about avoiding challenges. It’s about facing and embracing them. The struggles you face today are shaping you into the successful, high-performing salesperson, sales leader you be tomorrow. Stay resilient, keep innovating, and never lose focus. You’ve got this. I want to close with a quote from Maya Angelou, All great achievements require time. Be patient and persistent and persevere. You will be profitable. Have a great day selling.
