Scott Ingram: We’re doing the countdown of the Top Tips of 2023. Here’s #9:
You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from a facsimile of Chris McNeill. Here IT is:
Chris McNeill: Howdy Sales Success Community. Chris McNeil back with another tip. This one is all about meditation. Meditation can be a powerful tool for improving your performance as a salesperson. I’m not talking about sitting cross-legged on a mountaintop chatting. I’m talking about a simple 15-minute daily practice focused on training your perception. Some folks in the Sales Success Community know this, but I burned out hard sometime last year and have been working on putting myself back on track.
Meditation has played a bigger role than I expected it would. It has helped me reduce stress and anxiety, sleep better at night, be more focused and productive, and helped transform me into someone nicer to be around. I cannot picture starting my day without it, which is why today marks Day 60 in my unbroken streak of meditating. By the time you hear this, I’ll be well on my way to 70. Here’s how it works.
Meditation is training for the mind. Just like you spend time learning and honing your sales skills, you can also invest time in training your mind to react in a healthier way. Meditation promotes clarity in perception and thought, helping to define how you will experience things. By being more thoughtful and less reactive in situations, you’ll improve every aspect of your life, both personally and professionally.
One of my favorite things about meditation is that you can’t really measure it. This makes it an incredibly healthy offset to the world salespeople operate within. In the highly metric-driven world of sales, it isn’t possible to meditate harder. You can only meditate. Sometimes you’ll be restless, sometimes you won’t. But it will definitely help turn down the volume on those late-night thoughts about your metrics. The best part, you don’t have to be a meditation guru to reap the benefits. All you need is a simple app in 15 minutes a day.
I use an app on my phone that talks me through a simple breathing and awareness exercise. It’s like polishing the lens through which I look at life. That’s today’s sales tip. If you want to be at your best as a salesperson, take some time to invest in your mind. Give meditation a shot and see how it can help you perform at a higher level. If you want to give it a try, shoot me a note on LinkedIn and I can share a guest pass with you for the app I use. No strings attached. If you already practice, let me know. Maybe I can learn something from your experience.
