Soctt Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast, and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Scott Leese.
Scott is a well-established sales leader in the startup community. He now runs Scott Leese Consulting. He’s the founder of Surf and Sales and the author of Addicted to the Process. I asked Scott a series of questions back in January and his answer to my asking him about what we need to be thinking about and doing differently in sales was so on point. Here’s what he said:
Scott Leese: I think we should have a lot more open and honest conversations about the lack of diversity in sales in particular and sales leadership. This is a gender conversation. This is racial conversation. This is background conversations. Too much of this stuff is still buried very deep. You know, three, four layers deep, stuck in the closet, you know, somewhere. And nobody wants to talk about it. We’ve got to start talking about these things and doing something about it if we expect anything to change.
Scott Ingram: After Scott made this point, I asked him what we could actually do about it.
Scott Leese: Well, we’ve got to give people opportunity. Number one, you know, so many times I’ve run into situations where people in hiring roles will say to somebody, you know what, Scott? We really love you, but you just don’t quite have the experience, you know? Well, there’s a difference between somebody who can do something and somebody who has done it.
So let’s start taking some chances on some people we believe can do it. And let’s stop defaulting to people who have done it before. And we absolutely control that. You know, there are thousands upon thousands of companies out there who have the ability to pull the trigger and give, you know, minorities and women more opportunities to step into leadership roles. And they’re just not. And they come up with excuses. They excuses being, well, I don’t know where to find them, excuses being they don’t quite have the experience I’m looking for, you know, bullshit. Let’s take a little bit of a chance on somebody and let’s nurture them and coach them and guide them and make them successful. Right. We need to do more of that.
Scott Ingram: This is a conversation and a series of actions we need to continue to be taking as a sales community. I’m committed to keeping this topic alive. And Scott has been a man of massive action on this topic to learn more about Scott Leese Consulting and to get connected with him on LinkedIn just in case you’re not already, just click over to DailySales.tips/555
