Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes in the form of a clip from my most recent Sales Success Stories podcast interview with Janae Dandridge of Tableau that just released today. Here she is talking about what allowed her to stop struggling as an SDR early in her career:
Janae Dandridge: One of these people who, I would one, I would get the script and I would like to try to read the script for verbatim. And I got to a point where I wasn’t sounding like myself. I still sounded so robotic. I wasn’t showing my personality. And I got frustrated because I thought I was doing something that didn’t allow me to use my strategic thinking skills or my creativity, right? And so that was frustrating because I was just stuck on this script. And that’s what I felt I had to be successful. The other thing was when I started out cold calling, I, you got rejected. And for a while, I took it personally and I eventually realized that one, you’re reading a script, you’re asking these questions. You know it’s not you, it’s a number of other factors that are causing you to be rejected.
And then two, because I was reading the script, I sometimes found it not authentic and not myself and people can read through that. And so eventually I was just like, you know what, forget the script. Just be yourself. Have a conversation, talk to people, ask questions, but also seek out opportunities where you can be more involved in strategizing on what the message is, or be creative in your approach and reaching out to prospects. And that’s when I really started to find my group. So that was definitely a really challenging time, but I managed to overcome it through know addition to the script, but you know, also being creative and just being myself.
