“I think the lesson I learned from there is that when you’re struggling, this is actually a real opportunity and you’ve got to take the opportunities when they come, whether they’re good or bad and just in every one is the chance to learn and reassess what you do right and then the test ready” – Jono Clegg in today’s Tip 59

Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips Podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip is an excerpt from the latest episode of the Sales Success Stories podcast that also released today, where I interviewed Jono Clegg. Jono is a former Olympian turned medical device sales rep and was just named the International Rep of the Year for 2018 at Wright Medical. Here he is:
Jono Clegg: So, I think for me, actually this goes back to when I was a sports person and I think this relates well to work and everything like that because this was a huge setback and I in 2013, I ended up getting a really bad injury. I’d spend years, six, seven years of not having an injury. I’m being really quite robust as an athlete, but in 2013 I had an injury on a cycling camp in December. Initially, it was just a few scrapes and cuts, but I soldiered on through the rest of the camp and everything kind of went off for Christmas break and we came back from Christmas and when it’s straight off and another cup. But I could start to feel that something wasn’t quite right, but we had already a competitive group. And the thing with that is so you don’t want to miss out. And so, I kept pushing myself and got through the cup, but when we got home we had some real assessments to do and these were big Olympic test assessments and making sure that you’re strong for these really mattered but I ended up having to, I was missed those tests because my back went and this led to a series of scans that confirmed I had a tear in my hip joint. And this is actually really useful in my daily life now that having this, that’s an injury story can relate to surgeons. But the challenge was that I was, this is something I’d never experienced before. I’d never had an injury. So what did I do that, this is where I really leaned on everyone around me, the people that had injuries before my team, my physios, and basically just worked my goals into this new injury and working back and working on my weaknesses and ended up coming back from that and had my most successful trial in the April.
So, from having my first injury in December to back to full fitness and performing actually better. I think the lesson I learned from there is that when you’re struggling, this is actually a real opportunity and you’ve got to take the opportunities when they come, whether they’re good or bad and just in every one is the chance to learn and reassess what you do right and then the test ready. I’d say that was the biggest challenge that I come back from and I use that that now every day in terms of every opportunity. I have good, bad is a learning opportunity.
