Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. We’re kicking off another multi-part series with Chris McNeill today. Chris is a long-time contributor to the Sales Success Community and serves as a Director of Sales at Infinite Convergence Solutions. Here he is:
Chris McNeill: Howdy Sales Success Community. Chris McNeill yet again. Since no one has asked me to stop yet, I’m going to keep sharing some more tips that have helped me succeed as an individual contributor.
With all the LinkedIn posts about crying CEOs laying people off this week, he figured it would be helpful to run a short series focused on how to get hired in sales. Hired by me, at least. Hopefully, this will help some people out there. Either way, be sure to let me know on LinkedIn but don’t post pictures of yourself crying.
Up first. Don’t wait until you see a job opening. Sales-driven companies are almost always hiring the right talent, no matter what they tell you. I think almost half of all positions get filled before being posted publicly. So if you’re waiting to see a position open up, you may have already missed the boat.
In my world, I’m typically recruiting for outbound hunters, not account managers, which means I want people that will go after the things that they perceive to be opportunities. One of the best ways to demonstrate that is to hunt down the opportunity to be part of a sales organization.
Be persistent, be confident, and just be there at the right time by being proactive.
So that’s today’s tip to get hired in sales don’t wait for a job posting. Hunt down the position you want.
Be sure to drop me a note on LinkedIn if you heard this and come back tomorrow and listen to that tip, if you really want to know how to get the attention of someone that is hiring for sales positions.
