I don’t think my mom ever made more than $14,000 in a year. So we always kind of roughed it. My dad got put in a wheelchair when I was very young, so he didn’t really work. Things were pretty tough and I’m sure that’s a pretty common theme, but what’s not common is when we were on our last dollar. My mom took that dollar and decided to buy a lottery ticket. Which I don’t condone now even, but she happened to win 7 Million dollars with that dollar and it started to shift some things for us. I often talk about in my own seminars about how our beliefs come from our own experiences. I think that happening to me at such a critical point in my life created a belief in me that magic can happen. To all the ones who may hear that and think that you’re not going to win the lottery or whatever. I tell people that’s true, you’re probably not. So we need to learn how to create magic for ourselves, and that’s kind of a theme in the things that I teach.

I learned a long time ago that the best thing for me to do, to get to the next level. The secret to reaching the top was actually stopping comparing myself to everybody else and starting comparing myself to my best. The reality is we can never be like anybody else, because we’re all independent human beings. There’s no two humans on the planet that are exactly alike. So why try to be everybody else? It’s good to strive for perfection, because then you’ll always be improving and becoming a better version of yourself, but to expect to achieve it is kind of crazy actually. I just believe in progress. If I’m making progress, that’s great. If I’m doing better today than I did yesterday at what I was doing yesterday, then I’m making progress and that’s a win. And celebrating that. Having high standards… I think about it like this: my bar for my standards is super high, but then my bar for celebration is super low. So the goal is to celebrate as much as possible.

New sales people think that they need to sell everything to everybody all of the time. Boy that’s just a lot of pressure to put on ourselves right? I believe that you don’t have to sell everything to everybody all the time. It’s OK if a customer is a suspect and not a prospect. It’s OK if you have a no sale. It’s OK if somebody no-shows you for an appointment. These things are OK and they happen to all of us, and my biggest thing is the goal is not to be perfect.

One of the highest compliments is when someone reaches out and asks if they can learn from you. Be willing and have the courage to reach out to people. I’ve done for years. John Ruhlin was one of my first mentors. The guy is amazing. He’s all over TV, wrote an amazing book. I mean, he’s just an amazing human being. And I had to reach out to him over and over and over and over and over again until he finally said: man, this guy’s serious. So he started giving me time, and now that’s turned into a life long relationship where he was at my wedding. Our families have traveled together and stuff like that. Having the courage to actually reach out and grab those mentors. That’s on you!

Focusing on the one thing. I don’t know if you’re familiar with it or not, but this is super powerful Scott. I remember getting introduced to it. Local guys here in Austin, Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. The book The One Thing. It really got me thinking what is the one thing that will make the biggest difference today and make everything else easier or unnecessary? So I’m just always focusing in on what’s the one most important thing I need to be working on today to move closer to what I’m trying to achieve this week, this month, this year.

I also remember John Ruhlin told me about this book called “High Trust Selling” by Todd Duncan. Great, great book and it really helps you think about the importance of owning responsibility for your business. How you want to run your business from a sales perspective. How to think about customers. He was the first person to introduce me to the philosophy of sometimes the customer isn’t always right, and it’s OK to fire clients. The importance of knowing what your standards are, and what your boundaries are, and then honoring those standards and boundaries. Even when a customer is trying to push through them or disregard them, or make you feel like you should sacrifice your values your boundaries your standards just because they’re a customer.

Because I believe when you win the morning you win the day… Anytime you talk about about morning routines, I always think about I think you already mentioned Hal Elrod. He’s got a great book: The Miracle Morning. Sounds like, there are definitely elements of that I hear in your routine… Absolutely, I’ve known Hal for years and I love Hal. If you don’t know about the Miracle Morning you should check it out. It’s just MiracleMorningBook.com. He’s impacting millions of lives around the world right now. What I love about Hal’s philosophy is that he teaches the miracle morning which a very specific process. He teaches, use this practice this, see what kind of an impact it makes on you. Then decide for yourself what your morning routine needs to be, and I really love that he owns that. It’s not about doing it his way and that’s the only right way. He’s just saying that this is what it is for me, and this is what’s making a difference for a lot of people when they first get introduced to it. But once you’re using it and it’s working for you if there’s something you don’t connect with or resonate with you don’t have to do it. Make your morning routine the way you want it to be. For him it’s like 4:30 in the morning every morning and it’s like an hour and a half long process, or whatever. Maybe it’s changed. He’s like hey if you don’t want to get up at 4:30 in the morning that’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Get up at 8. Get up whenever it’s best for you to get up, but just make sure you start your day off right with a morning routine that takes care of you first.

I learned from a mentor, Brendon Burchard, that the best way to strategize is to use what he calls the daily productivity sheet. It’s like a worksheet. I think you can download it on the website. You download this worksheet. You fill it out. I don’t necessarily fill out the worksheet everyday anymore, but it’s how I think about my day. It’s how I plan my day. It’s what are the three biggest projects I’m working on right now? What are the things that are must do to get done on those projects right now? You list those things out. Who are the people that I need to get in touch with today, that I need to reach out to to help me move these projects forward? Who are the people that I’m waiting to hear back from that I probably need to follow-up with again? Then, what are my priorities for the day? What are the things in those projects, outside those projects, around those projects… those things that gotta get done no matter what. All those things  go on a list. He calls it the daily productivity planner, that’s what it is. It’s just about going through and doing those things. Working that stuff out. That’s where that fifteen minutes of strategy everyday comes in. Figuring all that stuff out and then just following through on executing that stuff, and if there’s time at the end of the day. Then cool. I’ll do other things I need to do: check my email or work on other projects of whatever. That’s a huge thing. Time blocking is huge…
