Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today Meshell Baker, the Sales Confidence Igniter, is back to complete her multi-part series. Here she is:
Meshell Baker: Hello and welcome to the ABC’s of Sales. Today’s letter is Z and Z is for Zen. Zen is defined as a Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism emphasizing the value of meditation and intuition. It is also a very relaxed or meditative state of being peaceful and calm.
So why would you have a Zen approach to sales?
Well, sales is a full-contact sport. It often requires people deal with emotions of rejection, of uncertainty, of being uncomfortable, of being inconvenienced, of dealing with the unplanned and the unexpected on an ongoing regular basis, which can cause high levels of stress and dissatisfying and dissatisfaction. And dissatisfaction does not mean that you’re not succeeding. It just means that you are in emotional upheaval and turmoil every time something doesn’t go your way or the way you plan.
Having a Zen state allows you to have a deeper fulfillment and satisfaction in the process of becoming a top performer. I’m going to give you a few tips here to help you to maintain a Z en state and truly enjoy and reap the benefits of sales success.
Number one is stay present. I want you to think about it. If you’re in sales for 10 years, that’s 120 months without the certainty of knowing your income on a month-to-month basis. Who would not be thrown topsy-turvy in that state? Most sellers never even rectify or think about that they are going to be doing that for those long periods of time. Setting the standard that you actually enjoy the process, that the step-by-step routine things that you create throughout the day will help you to really embrace and enjoy the process of selling. Like any good farmer, as long as you plant, nurture, you will have bumper crops. So focus on the process not the outcomes, not the win. You’re focusing on just enjoying every day with the knowledge that is going to work your way.
Number two, become a billboard. So what I mean by becoming a billboard, be someone who demonstrates excellence. Again, when you are actually speaking to people and you are ensuring that you’re listening peacefully, knowing that the answers will appear as you fully focus in delivering that buyer the best possible experience, you become a billboard and a beacon. People want to work with you. They want to refer you. They become raving recommenders of you. So that consistency will always deliver more than you can anticipate.
Number three, practice mind over body. Our body is triggered by external stimuli that’s negative. So when you’re able to retell the story within your body, so instead of when you feel uncomfortable to be triggered that, Oh my God, something bad is going to happen, when you teach your body that when I’m uncomfortable, it means I’m going out of the comfort zone. Therefore, magic happens out of the comfort zone. Oh my God, I need to be excited. Guess what? You will start to deliver more excited outcomes. You’ll be met with more excitement, and you will enjoy the process more.
Remember, people are attracted to people who are amazing. So this is transitioning ining your body to expect favorable outcomes is how you attract more favorable outcomes.
And then the last one I’ll leave you with is developing a mantra. What I mean by developing a mantra is something that you say to yourself, something quick. It’s a shift that helps you to rethink, refocus on the fact that you’re amazing, that this is no matter what the situation, circumstance or person, this is just a moment in time and you have consistently been out there planting seeds, and nurturing that, this does not detract, deter, delay or deny you from the delivery of your excellent sales results.
So one of my mantras that I live by is everything is working in my favor. And on those rough days, I might have actually say everything is always working in my favor. You can call it God, Buddha, divine, the spirit, Genie, whatever you want to call the universe. There’s something greater out there that loves humanity and you, my friend, are part of humanity. So remember to speak life over yourself so you can exist in an elevated state.
My other favorite one is my best will always deliver my better. What that allows me to do is to be excellent no matter what. You ur bad day does not dictate my excellence or my amazing because those are the seeds I plant so that I will always harvest excellent and amazing. I want you to remember, you have the ability to decide what your outcomes are on a daily basis and you want to truly enjoy and be satisfied and fulfilled in selling, separate yourself from the sales process and become someone who enjoys delivering excellent. Have a great day selling.
